• “Science x Business”: Transfer Week 2023

The Transfer Week Berlin-Brandenburg 2023 starts with an all-day kick-off conference in the stilwerk KantGaragen. From 20 to 24 November, the event in Brain City Berlin will once again bring scientists together with representatives from business and politics. On site and in digital sessions, the focus is on future topics in the region, funding issues, networking and matchmaking. Visits to five Berlin future and innovation locations are also on the program.

Berlin’s economy is particularly innovative compared to other German metropolises. As the “Innovationserhebung Berlin 2022” (“Innovation Survey Berlin 2022”) by the Technologiestiftung Berlin” (Technology Foundation Berlin”, TSB) showed, around 46 percent of the companies in the Brain City Berlin launched new products in 2021. The proportion of innovators in the area of research and development is particularly high. This is partly because Berlin companies are increasingly investing in this area: In 2021, total expenditure on R&D in Berlin exceeded 3 billion Euro for the first time. Another reason for the high level of innovation is the high density of universities, colleges and top-class non-university research institutions in the city. The scientists in the capital region not only work with researchers from other disciplines, but also increasingly with companies on a transdisciplinary basis. This is especially true for engineering sciences.

Since 2020, Transfer Week Berlin-Brandenburg has been committed to driving forward the lively transfer of technology between science and business in Berlin and Brandenburg. It is about bringing new ideas and findings from research to the market more quickly and in a more targeted manner. Following the success of recent years, the Transfer Week Berlin-Brandenburg program has been significantly expanded. The motto of Transfer Week 2023 sums up the comprehensive approach: “Science x Business”:

The one-day kick-off conference in the stilwerk KantGaragen is new and at the same time a highlight of the program. The former car park in Charlottenburg’s Kantstrasse is itself a place of transformation. On Monday 20 November it will be a place for exchange and dialogue on technology transfer. In a panel discussion and four expert panels, leading scientists from Berlin and Brandenburg will discuss with representatives from politics and business how the transfer ecosystem in Berlin can contribute to leading the existing scientific excellence in the region to sustainable economic value creation and resilient transformation. Brain City Ambassador Dr. Tina Klüwer, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Entrepreneurship Centre (K.I.E.Z.) and Brain City Ambassador Erik Wiegard, Managing Director of the Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science in Berlin Spandau, will also be presenting their visions.

Four main topics: Health, Artificial Intelligence, Industry of the future and FinTech

The focus of the conference addresses topics that are important for the location: Health, Artificial Intelligence, Industry of the future and FinTech. The keynote speech by Professor Dr. Søren Salomo from the Technische Universität Berlin on the topic of “The contribution of the Berlin transfer ecosystem to sustainable value creation and a resilient transformation” also promises to be exciting. And after a wrap-up of the results from the four panels, Professor Dr. Sascha Friesike, Director of the Weizenbaum Institute, will give an evening lecture at the end of the conference day. The title: “The transformation of transfer: What does the transfer of tomorrow need?”

From Tuesday, Transfer Week Berlin-Brandenburg will then move into virtual space: The one-hour online sessions from Tuesday to Friday will focus on practical knowledge, future-oriented topics and funding opportunities at regional, national and international level. Introductory orientation is offered on Tuesday morning by a session in which the partners of Transfer Week Berlin introduce themselves and their offers in 3-minute pitches.

Another highlight awaits the participants at the end of the week: For the first time this year, Transfer Week is offering tours of Berlin’s future and innovation locations. The tours will take place in parallel at five different locations on Friday 24 November.

Networking – beyond the event

In 2023, Transfer Week, organised by Berlin Partner for Business and Technology with the support of the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Berlin-Brandenburg Economic Development Corporation and the Berlin Chamber of Skilled Crafts, once again promises to provide a broad insight into transfer activities in the capital region. And of course there will once again be plenty of opportunities for exchange and networking on the sidelines of the event this year. For example, in the virtual matchmaking events, which are scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday from 16:00 to 17:00. Or on site at the kick-off conference: Personal matchmaking will take place here on Monday 20 November from 18:40.

You can register for this – as well as for all events of the Transfer Week Berlin-Brandenburg 2023 – via the event platform. This not only provides an overview of all Transfer Week offers, but is also intended to network the stakeholders in the capital region’s transfer system beyond the event. (vdo)
