#BRAINCITYBERLIN at the Day of German Unity

“Berlin will’s wissen” (“Berlin wants to know”) – this is the motto of the theme year “Wissensstadt Berlin 2021” which also provides the framework for Berlin's appearance at the celebrations for the 31st anniversary of German unification in Halle an der Saale. On 3 October, Brain City Berlin will be represented with the “Berlin Cube” at the EinheitsEXPO in Saxony-Anhalt. There is also a colourful supporting program that introduces visitors to the science city of Berlin in a variety of ways.

#BRAINCITYBERLIN is emblazoned in large letters above the “Berlin Cube” at the EinheitsEXPO (Unification Fair) on the 31st anniversary of German unification. The glass showcase is opposite the opera forecourt in the university quarter of the city of Halle in Saxony-Anhalt, where this year the main celebrations will take place under the motto “Shaping the future together”. On wood-framed photo walls, informative floor stickers, and via film and QR codes, the Cube presents one of the capital’s most prominent current re-use projects: “Berlin TXL – The Urban Tech Republic & Schumacher Quartier”.  In this field test for the city of the future on the site of the former Tegel Airport, science and research, industry and commerce, start-ups and investors will work together on solutions that will keep the growing metropolises of the 21st century alive: the efficient use of energy, sustainable construction, environmentally friendly mobility, recycling, the networked control of systems, clean water and new materials. Berlin TXL - The Urban Tech Republic is currently considered a unique project in Europe – and at the same time stands for the versatility, interdisciplinarity and the high level of research that characterise Berlin as a scientific location.

The programme - rich in content and entertaining

But of course that is not all: The exhibition in the “Berlin Cube” is flanked by a colourful supporting program: On a leafy terrace in front of the Cube, visitors can relax on loungers and listen to Berlin science podcasts. The listening program includes exciting topics such as the life of bats, the influence of the coronavirus on research and the effects of climate change. Entertainment and education at the same time will be provided by Berlin-based science slammer Dr. Franca Parianen, neuroscientist and winner of the 2017 Neuro-Slam of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurologie (German Society for Neurology, DGN), and science slammer and physicist Daniel Meza Arredondo, a doctoral student at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). In his research, he is trying to find a way to produce solar cells with environmentally friendly and low-cost materials. Younger visitors can experiment with the elements air and water in the research garden. And an advertising pillar shows science comics from the Helmholtz Association, which playfully deal with current topics such as “Smart Home”, “E-Cars” or “Gender roles in science”.

DJ Bensh accompanies the national program musically with his DJ Bike. And if you pay close attention when visiting the Berlin Cube and the terrace and answer the eight questions of the science quiz correctly, you might win one of the attractive prizes. Whether for those who are thirsty for knowledge or those who are hungry for adventure – a visit to the knowledge city at the “Berlin Cube” is definitely worthwhile! (vdo)
