2020 Innovation Award: Apply by 22th June!

Berlin’s Senator for Economics, Ramona Pop, and Brandenburg's Brandenburg’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Jörgs Steinbach, have once again announced the search for the states' joint innovation award. The region's companies, start-ups, and crafts entersprises can now apply for the prize valued at a total of €50,000. The competition also welcomes entries in cooperation with universities and research institutions.

An app that can be used to broker building materials quickly and easily and software for the automatic diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis were just two of the innovations that won the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award in 2019.

Which ideas from the region will receive the prestigious award this year remains to be seen. But not for long. Companies and research institutions in the fields of health care, energy technology, ICT, media and creative industries, optics and photonics, or transport, mobility and logistics can now apply for the 2020 Innovation Award, which comes with a total of 50,000 euros from the two states. On Monday, the Berlin Senator for Economics, Ramona Pop, and Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Jörg Steinbach, officially launched the competition. The application deadline is 22th June 2020.

“With the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award, we want to draw attention to companies that are coming up with intelligent solutions for the challenges of our times. They are strengthening the economic power of the capital region, creating future-proof jobs, and promoting the lively innovation culture,” Berlin Senator Ramona Pop said. A crisis like the current coronavirus pandemic is not only a major challenge for society as a whole, but also creates further demand for innovation. Brandenburg's Minister for Economic Affairs, Jörg Steinbach, highlighted the Innovation Award as a good example of the extremely fruitful innovation climate in Berlin and Brandenburg. "This not only benefits the many outstanding innovators, but also the entire capital region."

The Innovation Award has been awarded regionally since 1984 and jointly with Brandenburg since 1992. An independent jury of representatives from business and research select up to five recipients for the award. 206 companies applied in 2019, about 15% more than in the previous year. The official ceremony for the 2020 awards will take place on 27th November in Berlin. (vdo)
