Exhibition tip: MS Wissenschaft in Berlin

Full steam ahead! In early May, the ‘MS Wissenschaft’ floating science centre with its interactive exhibitions will once again set sail around Germany. The first stop of the tour will be the Schiffbauerdamm at Brain City Berlin from 3 to 8 May. Admission is free.

How does science actually work? It’s never easy to answer this complex question but ‘MS Wissenschaft’ is giving it a go. At the beginning of May, the 100 metre-long, green and white exhibition ship will travel along rivers and lakes to moor up in various German cities. The first stop for the floating science centre is Brain City Berlin. From 3 to 8 May, MS Wissenschaft will dock at the Schiffbauerdamm in Mitte, between the ‘Friedrichstraße’ railway bridge and the Marschall bridge.

From the universe to the deep sea: learn a lot about research

The exhibition will comprise 30 exhibits this year. True to its tagline ‘Participate!’ for the Year of Science 2022, visitors can step on board to learn more about science in an interactive way. How do you explore the universe or the deep sea? What tools and methods do scientists use to collect their data and how do they explore the future?

In fact, two of the exhibits come from Berlin: The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is giving visitors an insight into how collections are developed and recorded using modern technology. Together with the organisation ‘Wissenschaft im Dialog’, the Natural History Museum will also present the project ‘Bürger schaffen Wissen’ (citizens create knowledge): those interested can take a questionnaire to find out what citizen science type they are and discover projects that may be of interest to them.

Another highlight of the MS Wissenschaft Berlin programme: a podium discussion on the topic of ‘Medicine for everyone?’ will take place on 5 May. This is being organised in partnership with the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH).

On tour across eight federal states

After Berlin, the exhibition ship will then head to Eberswalde (10 to 13 May) and Oranienburg (14 to 18 May). From 19 to 23 May, MS Wissenschaft will return to Berlin once again. However, this time it’ll be in Wannsee. The entire tour will take the ship from Berlin and Brandenburg to Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland to Baden-Württemberg; the final stop this year will be Frankfurt am Main (13 to 16 September).

Since 2002, MS Wissenschaft has also been supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Each year, new exhibitions are put together with the help of scientists. The idea behind the floating exhibition and the entire Year of Science aims to encourage people to actively engage with scientific processes.
