Science in ten minutes: Science Slams at the Zeiss-Großplanetarium

The summer holidays in Brain City Berlin have begun, and the Zeiss-Großplanetarium has just the event for the whole family: at the Science Slam, four young researchers take to the stage in the planetarium hall to present their research projects. The audience acts as jury and votes for the best performance of the evening.

Where knowledge meets entertainment

At the Science Slam, young researchers leave their labs and lecture halls and bring their current projects directly to the public. The rules are simple: ten minutes, no jargon, and a healthy dose of humour is welcome. Whoever makes the most convincing case for why their research matters wins. Topics can range from molecular biology and astrophysics to history, medicine or literary studies. Science Slams attract a genuinely mixed crowd: students and non-academics, teenagers and retirees, science enthusiasts and anyone who is simply curious.

After the audience vote, the Zeiss-Großplanetarium has one more treat in store: the team from Stiftung Planetarium Berlin takes guests on a 360° fulldome journey through the depths of the universe.

Berlin dates this summer

Those who do not want to wait can catch the first event as early as 16 July: the Archenhold Observatory in Treptow is also hosting a Science Slam, starting at 8:30pm. The Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Prenzlauer Berg follows with two further evenings on 5 August and 3 September, both starting at 8pm and running for around 120 minutes. Tickets start from 14 euros, with discounts for families. A further date at the Archenhold Observatory in Brain City Berlin is planned for 17 September.
