International forum for Health Issues: The World Health Summit
On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin the first World Health Summit was held in 2009 in Berlin.
The World Health Summit now takes place annually under the aegis of Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and Jean-Claude Juncker.
Health issues bring together science, business, politics, and society
Global health issues affect all policy areas and connect the most diverse social groups – from science, business, politics, and civil society – across national borders. In this sense, the network of the World Health Summit, which now counts more than 20,000 participants, has been growing for ten years. More than 120 countries and 7,500 organizations as well as leading scientists, Nobel laureates, and officials from the major health organizations are involved.
An important think tank for the World Health Summit is the merger of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities, and National Academies. The alliance comprises 25 members from 18 countries and is dedicated to a common goal: How can health be improved worldwide?
World Health Summit 2018 in Berlin – 3 days, 45 sessions, 200 speakers, and 2,000 participants
Every year, the World Health Summit addresses the issues that are of particular concern to the global health community. The focal points of the World Health Summit 2018 are:
- Antibiotic resistances
- Drug counterfeiting
- Access to essential pharmaceuticals
- The digital revolution in healthcare
- Strengthening health systems
- Health in all policy areas
The international professional audience will be addressing one of the most important issues of our time in Berlin from October 14 to 16, 2018, in high-level keynote speeches, podium discussions, and workshops, as well as various initiatives and satellite events. The speakers include Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and Bill Gates, as well as Federal Ministers Jens Spahn (BMG) and Gerd Müller (BMZ).
The interdisciplinary nature of the health event in Berlin offers scientists from different disciplines opportunities for participation. In particular, thanks to the openness of the event, a forum is being held every year in Berlin on the subject of global health, which promotes the exchange of ideas and networking.
