The three major Berlin universities are among the top 100 universities in the world. That’s according to World University Ranking 2018 published by the British magazine, Times Higher Education. The Humboldt University secured 62nd place, followed the Free University in 88th place, and the Institute of Technology in 92nd place.

Ten German universities made the Top 100 in the international Times Higher Education ranking. Compared to the rest of Germany, the three Berlin universities took the fourth, seventh and eighth places.
As was the case last year, the Technische Universität Berlin is making significant strides, especially in terms of external funding, which puts the institution well above the average. It is also in the top 25% for research and teaching. In addition to the general university rankings, the data is evaluated according to specialist areas. In the humanities, Humboldt University is the only German university in the top 20 (18th place). The Free University follows in 24th place.
‘Germany is one of the most advanced countries for education in the world, but the country’s universities are increasingly coming under pressure from Asia,’ says Phil Baty, editor of the World University Rankings. Within the framework of the excellence initiative, investors are being enticed by the strong research reputation of German universities. However, their view of the future is more wary. According to investors, German universities are set to face ‘times of financial uncertainty’, as it is not yet clear what will happen during the 2020 University Pact between federal and regional governments – this pact is used to finance additional places for university entrants.
Method
Times Higher Education has published its assessment of global academia since 2004. This year’s rankings involved looking at 1102 universities, 120 more than the previous year. A total of 44 German universities were examined. The data used for the rankings was based on a survey carried out among researchers across the world, focusing on reputation, research, teaching and internationalism. The results also include the frequency of citations and statistical data provided by the universities themselves. According to the magazine, the rankings were independently verified by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
